Evolution is more than a debut album—it’s a cultural continuation and a sonic rebirth. DUNxG (Digital Underground Next Generation) carries the legacy forward, bridging the raw funk, humor, and fearless creativity of the original Digital Underground with a modern, futuristic sound designed for today’s world.

Rooted in West Coast heritage and elevated by next-generation production, Evolution blends hip-hop, funk, R&B, and soul into a sound that feels both nostalgic and new. It’s a project that honors where the culture started while pushing it into uncharted territory—combining live energy, digital textures, and forward-thinking storytelling.

At its core, Evolution is about transformation—of sound, identity, and legacy. Led by the next generation, the album represents growth, independence, and the passing of the torch, without losing the essence that made the movement iconic in the first place.

From feel-good records that bring back the funk, to high-energy anthems and introspective moments, Evolution captures the spirit of a group redefining itself in real time. It’s music for the party, the culture, and the future.

Jimi "Chopmaster J" Dright is a pioneering musician, producer, and co-founder of the legendary hip-hop group Digital Underground. As the original drummer and co-creator of the influential collective, Chopmaster J played a pivotal role in shaping the sound and style of West Coast hip-hop in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Digital Underground made history as the first West Coast hip-hop group to be signed by an East Coast label, breaking regional barriers and expanding the reach of their funk-infused sound. Jimi earned the name Chopmaster J for his exceptional skills in Dj’ing, sampling, and drumming as well as his intangible skills in contracting and promotion.

In 1990, Digital Underground achieved massive success with their breakout hit "The Humpty Dance" from their debut album Sex Packets. The song topped the Billboard Rap charts and became a cultural phenomenon. The group is also credited with launching the career of Tupac Shakur, who got his start as a backup dancer and later made his recording debut with the collective.

Continuing the Digital Underground legacy, DUNxG (Digital Underground Next Generation) was formed as a second-generation hip-hop band inspired by the original group. S.O.T.U. (Son Of The Underground)—the son of Chopmaster J—leads this new collective, paying homage to where it all began while pushing hip-hop forward. The group consists of members from diverse musical backgrounds, blending classic Digital Underground vibes with fresh, innovative styles. From laid-back, sample-based grooves to high-energy, party anthems, DUNxG is reviving the essence of concept-driven, storytelling hip-hop while creating a new movement of their own.

Beyond his work with Digital Underground, Chopmaster J has remained active in the music industry. In 2024, he released The Kamala Album, celebrating Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, a former classmate of his. His passion for blending classic funk rhythms with modern hip-hop sensibilities continues to influence artists and shape the genre.

With a career spanning decades, Jimi "Chopmaster J" Dright continues to make waves in the industry. Whether on stage, in the studio, or behind the scenes, his impact on music and culture remains undeniable.
